Accurate freight calculation is essential in international logistics. Whether shipping by air, sea, road, or courier, understanding how chargeable weight and volume are calculated helps businesses control costs, optimize packaging, and avoid unexpected charges.
To simplify this process, we have centralized all our logistics calculators in one place. Below, you will find dedicated calculators for each transport mode, helping you determine the correct billable weight quickly and efficiently.
Which Calculator Do I Need?
Not sure which calculator applies to your shipment? Here is a quick guide:
1. Air Freight Chargeable Weight Calculator
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator if your shipment travels by air and you need to determine the chargeable weight before requesting a quotation.
Air freight pricing is based on the higher value between actual weight and volumetric weight.
Volumetric Weight Formula
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Width x Height in cm) / 6,000
Volumetric Weight (lbs) = (Length x Width x Height in inch) / 166
Chargeable Weight Rule
The chargeable weight is the higher of:
- Actual gross weight
- Volumetric weight
This ensures optimal use of aircraft cargo space and accurate billing.
Formula: (L × W × H) ÷ 6000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)

2. Ocean Freight LCL (W/M) Calculator
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator if you are shipping less than one full container (LCL - Less than Container Load).
Ocean LCL shipments are calculated using the W/M rule (Weight or Measurement).
W/M Rule
1 CBM = 1,000 kg
The chargeable unit is whichever is higher:
- Cargo weight in metric tons
- Cargo volume in cubic meters (CBM)
This calculator helps you determine how many W/M units your shipment represents.
Formula: (L × W × H) ÷ 1,000,000 = CBM
W/M Principle: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg (1 ton)
The higher value between volume (CBM) and weight (tons) is used for pricing.
Pallet Type 1
Total Summary
Total Pallets
1
Total Volume
0.480 CBM
Total Gross Weight
800.00 kg
(0.800 tons)
Total Chargeable Weight
0.800 W/M units
3. Road Freight Volumetric Weight Calculator (LTL)
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator for road freight shipments that do not occupy a full truck (LTL - Less Than Truckload).
Road freight LTL pricing is based on chargeable weight.
Volumetric Weight Formula
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Width x Height in cm) / 3,000
Volumetric Weight (lbs) = (Length x Width x Height in inch) / 83
Note: The divisor may vary depending on the carrier.
Standard LTL (1:3): 3000 cm / 83 in | Light LTL (1:4): 4000 cm / 111 in
Chargeable Weight Rule
The chargeable weight is the higher of:
- Actual weight
- Volumetric weight
This encourages efficient loading and optimized truck capacity usage.
LTL Road Freight Chargeable Weight Calculator
Enter your cargo dimensions and weight to calculate the chargeable weight for LTL shipments
Formula: Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H) ÷ 3,000
Standard LTL (1:3): 3000 cm / 83 in | Light LTL (1:4): 4000 cm / 111 in
4. Courier / Express Chargeable Weight Calculator
When to Use This Calculator
Use this calculator for parcel shipments, documents, samples, or small packages sent via courier or express services.
Courier pricing is based on dimensional (volumetric) weight.
Volumetric Weight Formula
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Width x Height in cm) / 5,000
Volumetric Weight (lbs) = (Length x Width x Height in inch) / 139
Chargeable Weight Rule
The higher value between actual weight and volumetric weight becomes the chargeable weight.
This ensures fair pricing based on both size and weight.
Formula: (L x W x H in cm) / 5,000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)
Standard courier divisor: 5,000 (may vary by courier company)
